Basic Concepts of Virtual Memory

The motivation behind using virtual memory is presented in this section. Basically, programmers did not want to be limited by any artificial constraint, and the maximum size of real memory was seen to be such a constraint. Several attempts to get around it were tried, such as subprogram overlays, but virtual memory has caught on and is now almost universal.
