This process of shifting the mantissa and adding to the exponent is called exponent adjustment, or decimal point alignment.

Our addition problem becomes:

           0.56740 x 105
     +     0.00038 x 105
     -------------------
           0.56778 x 105

What we did was to line up the decimal points. Then we go ahead and add.
