The need for networks

What is a computer but a network of components, linked by buses? Today's computers seem isolated and dead unless they are connected to a network, especially the Internet and its primary interface, the World Wide Web. But networking goes back a long ways and was slow in coming. This chapter explores a little of the technology behind it all.
