Protocol Stacks

Almost as fundamental as the concept of the packet is the concept of layering. Actually, operating systems were built using layers but networking protocols make this method of construction very explicit. Layers are useful because they hide the complexity in the layer underneath. This section illustrates layering using the TCP/IP system. The set of layers in a protocol is called the protocol stack.
