Section 18.2
How I/O actually works

In this section we look at a primitive input device called a tape reader and examine the commands that the CPU can send to it. Then we talk about a hardware protocol for communication with this device and the exact sequence of wire signals that are need to get data from the tape. This is wrapped up in a short assembler program that the main CPU runs to poll the tape reader in order to read data.
